Karimeh Abbud was a Palestinian professional photographer and artist, born in the town of Betlehem and originally from Khiam-Lebanon. She lived and worked in Palestine during the first half of the twentieth century. She was one of the first woman photographers in the Arab World and the first to start a professional photography studio.
Beirut Image Festival will organize a tribute exhibition of Abbud’s works in September 2019.
كريمة عبود (18 نوفمبر 1893 – 27 أبريل 1940) ، مصورة وفنانة فلسطينية محترفة ، وُلدت في مدينة بيت لحم لأبٍّ قدم من بلدة الخيام اللبنانية. عاشت عبُّود وعملت في فلسطين خلال النصف الأول من القرن العشرين. تعتبر من أوائل المصورات في العالم العربي والاولى التي افتتحت ستوديو خاصاً بها. يكرِّم مهرجان بيروت للصورة المصورة عبود في نسخته الاولى بإقامة معرض لأعمالها.
Jana Traboulsi, Lebanese visual artist, graphic designer and illustrator. She earned a Bachelor of Graphic Design from the American University of Beirut and a Master’s degree in Media and Communication Studies from Goldsmiths College, London. She is the co-founder and creative director of pan-Arab quarterly “Bidayat” and the artistic director of “Snoubar Bayrout” publishing house. In 2014, she has co-founded “Sigil”, an art collective based in Beirut and New York. More recently, she has joined “Waraq”, a cultural association supporting artists working in the Arab region. She is active in different creative fields in addition to teaching design and illustration and lecturing in history and theory.

جنى طرابلسي، فنانة بصرية، مصممة ورسامة لبنانية. حائزة على درجة البكالوريوس في التصميم الغرافيكي من الجامعة الأمريكية في بيروت، ودرجة الماجستير في دراسات الإعلام والاتصالات من كلية جولد سميث في لندن. شاركت في تأسيس المجلة العربية الفصلية “بدايات”، وتعمل كمديرة فنية في دار نشر “صنوبر بيروت”. في عام ٢٠١٤، شاركت في تأسيس مجموعة “سِجِلّ”، وهي مجموعة فنية مقرها بيروت ونيويورك. انضمت مؤخراً إلى “ورق”، وهي جمعية ثقافية تعمل في مجال دعم الفنانين الناشطين في المنطقة العربية. وهي ناشطة في مجالات إبداعية مختلفة، بالإضافة الى تدريس التصميم الغرافيكي والرسم.

أحمد بزون: صحافي وكاتب لبناني، يشتغل في الصحافة منذ العام ١٩٨٣، بدأ عمله في لبنان بمجلة “بيروت المساء”، وأنهاه بجريدة “السفير” التي اشتغل فيها ٢٣ سنة ناقداً تشكيلياً، وشغل منصب رئيس القسم الثقافي فيها لمدة ١٨ سنة. راسل صحفاً عربية عدة ولما يزل. حاز جائزة سعيد عقل، وشارك في تحكيم مسابقات ثقافية وتشكيلية، وفي مؤتمرات محلية وخارجية. له عدة مؤلفات.

Ahmad Bazzoun: Lebanese journalist and author. He started his career in 1983 in Lebanon with “Beirut Al Masaa” magazine, and concluded it with the “Assafir” newspaper, where he worked for 23 years as a critic and served as Head of Cultural section for 18 years. He continues to write for several Arab newspapers. He participated in arbitration of cultural and art competitions, as well as several local and foreign conferences. He won the Said Akl Prize and he has written several publications and books.
Ahmad Bazzoun will be part of the Beirut Image Festival 2019’s committee.
Norbert Schiller: Austrian-American photojournalist, author and Middle East photo historian. He has lived and worked in the Middle East and Africa as a news photographer for over a quarter of a century beginning in the early 1980s. He worked for numerous news agencies, magazines and newspapers. During that time he covered three Iraq wars; conflicts and famine in the Horn of Africa; Islamist insurgencies in Egypt and North Africa and the Arab Israeli conflict, to name a few. He also wrote about his experiences for a variety of publications and co-authored several books about the region. Besides taking his own pictures he is an avid collection of 19th and 20th century photography of the Middle East and North Africa and maintains a collection in the tens of thousands. His acquisitions regularly appear on http://www.photorientalist.org, a website that Schiller created to exhibit his and other photo collectors’ treasures.

نوربرت شيلر: مصور صحافي ومؤرشف صور نمساوي-أميركي. عاش وعمل في الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا كمصور للأخبار لأكثر من ربع قرن ابتداء من أوائل الثمانينيات. عمل في العديد من وكالات الأنباء والمجلات والصحف. خلال تلك الفترة غطى ثلاثة حروب في العراق، الصراعات والمجاعات في القرن الإفريقي، والصراع العربي الإسرائيلي. كما كتب عن تجاربه لمجموعة متنوعة من المنشورات، وشارك في تأليف العديد من الكتب حول المنطقة. إضافة الى ذلك عمل شيلر على جمع الصور التاريخية من القرنين التاسع عشر والعشرين من منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا، حيث تحتوي مجموعته على عشرات الالاف من الصور التي ينشرها على متحفه الالكتروني photorientalist.org وهو موقع أنشأه شيلر لعرض
كنوزه وغيرها من جامعي الصور.

JANINE HAIDAR
Lebanese-British photo editor for the Agence France Presse (AFP). She was co-responsible for the photo production of AFP based for one year in Baghdad, Iraq and in other mideast conflict zones.
Haidar left her native Lebanon with her parents after their home was destroyed in the civil war. In 1986, after her studies at Canterbury University in the UK, she returned to Lebanon to work as editor and was put in charge of the photo department at the Associated Press during the final years of the Civil war.
Returning back to England she joined a small photo agency (Nunn) specializing in royalty and pop stars. Around 1992 Haidar rejoined AP, moving from the photo desk in London to
the editing team at the New York HQ, where she worked mostly on Central and Latin American stories. She has been with AFP since 2001, in their Mideast headquarters, Cyprus, and now in Paris.
Haidar has covered major sporting events including the Olympics and the World Cup. She has been a judge on numerous photography panels including the World Press photos, HIPP, Africa Photo and the Arabuap.
Janine Haidar will be part of the Beirut Image Festival 2019’s committee.
جنين حيدر
محررة صور لبنانية ـ بريطانية تعمل في وكالة فرانس برس. كانت مسؤولة عن إنتاج صور لوكالة فرانس برس لمدة عام في بغداد و ومناطق الصراع في الشرق الأوسط الأخرى.
تركت حيدر وطنها لبنان مع والديها بعد تدمير منزلهم في الحرب الأهلية. في عام 1986 ، بعد دراستها في جامعة كانتربري بالمملكة المتحدة ، عادت إلى لبنان للعمل كمحررة تصوير وتولت مسؤولية قسم التصوير في وكالة أسوشيتيد برس خلال السنوات الأخيرة من الحرب الأهلية.
عند عودتها إلى إنجلترا،انضمت إلى وكالة صور صغيرة ندعى (Nunn) متخصصة في تصوير المشاهير نجوم موسيقى البوب. في عام 1992، انضمت حيدر إلى وكالة أسوشيتيد برس مجددا، وانتقلت من مكتب التصوير في لندن إلى مركز الوكاله الرئيسي في نيويورك، حيث عملت على قصص أمريكا الوسطى واللاتينية. عملت مع وكالة فرانس برس منذ عام 2001 ، في مقرها بالشرق الأوسط ، قبرص ، وتعمل الآن في باريس.
غطت حيدر الأحداث الرياضية الكبرى بما في ذلك الألعاب الأولمبية وكأس العالم. كانت مُحَكمة في العديد من مسابقات التصوير العالمية.

Nabil Ismail
He is prominent lebanese photojournalist, famous for covering the Lebanese civil war and many other top international events.
Started working as a photojournalist in 1975 when he joined al-Nidaa newspaper and in 1977 he worked at al-Hurria weekly then or few months with Dar al-Sayyad and al-Watan.
In 1980 joined al-Safir newspaper and worked as a freelancer for Associated Press until 1984.
In 1984 he joined French News Agency (AFP), Beirut as the chief photographer until 1995.
Established the commercial photo agency “International pictures”.
He worked as chief photographer at al-Mustaqbal newspaper between 1999 and 2019.
One of the founders of the Lebanese Syndicate of Press Photographers and its head for six years.
In addition to the Lebanese civil war, he also covered major conflicts in the Middle east.
The Beirut Image Festival 2019 is proudly featuring Nabil Ismail’s artwork in an exhibition about “Beirut”.

Raed Asfour, Jordan
A Jordanian Photographer who Exhibited multiple solo shows in Jordan and Egypt like: (Barbed Wires) 2017; first solo exhibition at Darat Al Funon (Amman, Jordan), (Barbed Wires); solo exhibition Beit el Sura (Cairo, Egypt), (The End) solo exhibition as part of The 6th Amman Image Festival at Al Balad Theater 2017, (Jordan). He is a director and artistic curator and the director and co-founder of Al Balad theatre / Jordan. He also is the Executive director of the Arab Theatre training center, Lebanon.
Raed Asfour’s artwork will be exhibited at the Beirut Image Festival 2019.
Yara Saade is a Lebanese artist based in Beirut. In the past 10 years she had exhibitions in Beirut, Minneapolis, Montreal and Rome. elements are all engaged in one sphere!

Over the last 16 years, photographer Amira Al-Sharif has covered war, conflict, and daily life in Yemen. She has received project grants from the Magnum Foundation, Prince Claus Foundation, and AFAC. She has online photo essays with National Geographic, Washington Post and The Guardian. She holds a diploma in documentary photography & photojournalism from ICP (2010 graduate).
Amira Alsharif will be participating in this year’s edition of the Beirut Image Festival.

على مدار الأعوام الستة عشر الماضية ، غطت المصوره أميرة الشريف الحرب والصراع والحياة اليومية في اليمن. وقد حصلت على منح مشاريع من مؤسسة ماغنوم ومؤسسة الأمير كلوز و AFAC. لديها مقالات على الإنترنت مع ناشونال جيوغرافيك وواشنطن بوست وجارديان البريطانيه. حصلت على دبلوم في التصوير الفوتوغرافي الوثائقي والتصوير الصحفي من المركز العالمي للتصوير بنيويورك (خريج 2010).

Marwan Naamani
He is a prominent Lebanese Photojournalist who started his career with Reuters News Agency in Beirut after graduating from the Lebanese American University (LAU) in 1986. He joined Agence France Presse (AFP) in 1997 in Cyprus and worked with AFP in Cairo, Baghdad, and Beirut before moving to Dubai as Chief photographer for the Gulf region.
In 2017, he moved to back Beirut and joined the German New Agency (DPA) in addition to working as a freelance photographer and photography trainer at Dar al Mussawir.
مروان نعماني
مصور صحافي لبناني بدأ مسيرته مع وكالة رويترز في بيروت بعد تخرجه من الجامعة اللبنانية الأمريكية في عام ١٩٨٦. التحق بوكالة الصحافة الفرنسية في عام ١٩٩٧ في قبرص، تنقل في العمل مع الوكالة في كل من القاهرة، بغداد وبيروت قبل أن ينتقل الى دبي مديراً لقسم التصوير في منطقة الخليج. عاد الى بيروت في العام ٢٠١٧ وانضم إلى الوكالة الألمانية ويعمل كمصور حر ومدرب تصوير في دار المصوّر

Professional photographer since 2008 and participated in many local and international exhibitions. He is the editor-in-chief of Gulf Arts, the founder of the Saudi International Salon of Photography and supervisor of the annual Ezz Al Khail Photography Competition. He is an active photographer and writes about photography in Saudi newspapers. He has won more than 12 awards in local and international competitions.
